Sources & licences
We only carry sources whose published terms allow republication. We keep a dated copy of each source's terms page and re-check it automatically; if the terms change, the source is paused until the new terms have been read.

What is not covered
A source's permission covers its own work only. Stories that a source takes from third-party agencies (for example Reuters, Lusa or AFP) are excluded automatically and never appear here.
Photos
A source's permission does not cover third-party photos that appear on its pages (agencies, companies, courts). Our system reads the credit line of every photo and shows it only when the photo belongs to the source itself. Otherwise you see a representative image from a small library of openly licensed photographs (clearly labelled, with author and licence, and never showing recognisable people) or a typographic card designed by Whitehall Minute. All library photographs are listed on the Image credits page.
